Carter awoke to the sound of sirens and shouts. He quickly realised what was happening; everyone had been practising for this since the NSNK *(New States of North Korea)* had announced the completion of their missiles and there hate for New America.
He ran down stairs and heard his mother calling his name. “Carter, get to the Tunnel!” Carter ran towards the big steel door labeled NEET *(Nuclear Explosion Escape Tunnel)*. These doors, commonly known as Tunnels, were in every household in the world, they all connected to the HSUB *(Human Support Underground Bunker)*. Carter typed the passcode into a small keypad on the side of the Tunnel and the huge metal door slowly swung open. Carter looked out the window and saw the missiles, blips of light against the dark sky. Once the Tunnel was open, he ran down the stairs and called up for his mother. “Mom, Hurry!” “Wait, I just need to…” Before his mother could finish, the radiation-censors on the Tunnel beeped loudly and the door automatically closed locking his mother out.
Carter slammed his fist on the door and cried “Mom!” There was no answer. “Please evacuate the area,” said a calm computer voice from the ceiling. The door began to slide towards Carter; pushing him down the stairs. He screamed and bashed the door until he was so tired that he collapsed and let the door push him down the stairs.
1:28 PM, January 17th, 3020
Carter was woken up by the sound of kids talking. “How’d they do it?” “They hacked the system” “Shut up, the coma kid is awake” Carter opened his eyes and saw a tall guy that looked about seventeen standing over him, “Hey kid, you pushed down here too?” he asked in a rough voice “yeah, I think” Carter replied. He sat up and saw about seven kids standing in a large courtyard with high gray walls staring back at him.
“What’s your name, newbie?” asked the kid with the rough voice, who wasobviously the leader. “Carter” mumbled Carter, “What?” said the leader,
“Carter, Carter Rockwood” he said slightly louder. “Not anymore” said the
leader, “now you’ll be called, um, Havoc”. Carter looked up at him and asked
“why?” The leader said, “We all need new names so we can start a new world, get
that”. “Sure” mumbled Carter. “I’m Smash, this is Glitch” he pointed to a short
slim boy tinkering with a radio “this is Fix” Smash said pointing to a husky
boy wearing a white coat “that’s Blueprint, but we all call him Blue” Smash
said pointing to a tall
lanky boy leaning against the wall. Just then, two girls and a boy walked into
the courtyard. Smash pointed them out and said, “That’s our recon team:
Catastrophe, Scope and Scout”. The boy named Scout walked towards Smash and
said, “Quake clan has started attacking Wild Fire clan and Flood clan won the
fight with Drought clan”. Smash swore under his breath and announced to the
group that they would have to prepare for an attack from Flood clan. Carter had
no idea what he was talking about. “Everyone get ready, they’ll be coming from
the west” shouted Smash. “Kid, can you stand?” he asked Carter. “I think”
Carter replied. “Follow me and I’ll give you a tour,” said Smash jokingly.
Carter stood up and followed Smash down a narrow hallway that lead off from the
courtyard. “You’ve been out for weeks, during the first couple days all the
kids just sat around whimpering or beating at the doors. After the first week
past, some of the smart kids found out that no adults are here because the NNSK
developed a gas that killed anyone over the age of nineteen and that the
radiation sensors on the Tunnels sensed the gas on the adults and they closed
before they adults could get in.”
